Book Review: Better off Friends

“So, as I was saying, guys and girls can be friends.'
'Best friends.'
'And what is better than falling in love with your best friend?'
'Nothing."
- Levi & Macallan, Better off Friends

From the title, it's ridiculously easy to gather what this book is about.

Yes.

It's that kind of story - when best friend A falls in love with best friend B. But, of course, best friend whoever (or even both) doesn't want to risk their beautiful friendship. And, of course, their feelings are never in sync - just when one has moved on, the other realizes his/her feelings. Then shit hits the fan.

In this book, best friend A is named Macallan while best friend B is called Levi. A year after Macallan's mother passes away in an accident, Levi transfers into her Wisconsin school. With his long blonde hair and surfer duds, Levi easily stands out and apart in the school. At first, Macallan doesn't want anything to do with Levi but she takes pity on him, and begrudgingly lets him in her circle of friends. When they discover a mutual love for the otherwise frowned upon show, Buggy and Floyd, the two grow inevitably closer, and closer... and you guessed it, shit hits the fan.

If you're one who gets easily infuriated with dense *coughLevicough* or stupidly stubborn *coughMacallancough* characters, high school drama, and long-drawn out conflicts, this book won't be for you.

Normally, this wouldn't be for me too but I found myself enjoying the dynamics between the two way too much. I especially adored the in-between chapter commentary from the two. While I'm not particularly fond of our hero and heroine individually, the two of them together is just a lot of fun. Enough fun to bump my one-star rating to a two-star.

Better off Friends brings nothing new to the table, serving you things you might already be tired of. But if you like books that digest easy with just the tiniest bit of spice, this one might prove interesting enough.

RATING: ☆☆ 2 stars
(it was okay)
